THE REGENT
A country on the brink of civil war. A woman fighting to earn her place. A people yearning for freedom
When a rebellious Princess becomes the Regent of Brazil, she must navigate the complexities of court life and political intrigue while advocating for the Abolition of Slavery.
The Regent is a feature film based on the autobiographical book “Alegrias & Tristezas”, (“Joys and Sorrows”) in partnership with the Instituto Cultural D. Isabel. The film explores the fascinating true story of Princess Isabel of Brazil at a time of political and cultural transition for the country.
A former Portuguese Colony in the late 1800’s, the Brazilian Empire’s Regency falls on Isabel’s shoulders. Quiet and religious, she is ill-equipped to face the clamor of the enslaved African-Brazilian people. When she rises above the antagonism of the landowning elite and signs freedom into law, the royal family is banished from Brazil to never return.
