THE RADIO
Once Upon a Time in Los Angeles
A 3-part docuseries about The Radio: the first hip-hop night-club in Los Angeles. At the origin of this wild and short-lived adventure (1982-1984), two teenagers, barely 18 years old, Alex Jordanov, a young French and a rapper in the making, Ice-T.
In under 2 years, this fabled club became the epicentre of the underground scene and the parties that took place there are the stuff of legend. It was also a must see (and be seen) for the Hollywood elite who came to enjoy the crazy parties and soak up the vibrations that would soon give birth to the West Coast rap scene and the worldwide culture that is hip-hop.
In The Radio, we meet a young Dr. Dre, Easy E, The Glove, Anthony Kiedis and the Red-Hot Chili Peppers, Matt Groening (the father of “The Simpsons”), Laurence Fishburne. A number of established artists come to experience the musical fever and creative energy that ignites the club’s nights: Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Bono, Van Halen…. Chaka Khan and Herbie Hancock even shot music videos there.
The Radio is above all a story of friendship between two people from very different backgrounds, the story of two young people driven by their passion for music, the fury of life and the ambition to make their place in a merciless America. We accompany them in messy robberies, jail time, the dolce vita. We succumb to the easy money, to the excesses, but above all we vibrate in the mysteries of inventiveness and creativity and become witnesses of a bygone era that masterfully illuminates our post-modern society.
Friendship, scams, corruption, drugs, sex and hip-hop…
Welcome to the Radio !
