MACUMBA: A FAMILY FOLKLORE
A magical realism drama set in Brazil 1960’s
This fantasy drama is a self contained short film proof of concept. When 12-year-old Elisabeth begins to have visions of a magical Afro-Brazilian sacred entity, she overcomes the generational trauma of corporal punishment.
Augusto and Ilza are faithful catholics in a working class family in the south of Brazil. After Augusto starts seeking spiritual protection in the local African religion, saints and rituals, known among catholics as “Macumba”, Ilza takes matters into her own hands.
The movie follows the consequences of Ilza’s attempt to play a trick on Augusto. The stormy Iansã, Saint of rainstorms and thunder, and mirror to the catholic Saint Barbara, begins to visit their daughter in an attempt to make the parents understand who they should be protecting. Featuring Raquel Stüpp as Ilza, Chico Caprario as Augusto, Joana dos Santos as Iansã and Saint Barbara, and presenting Zoê França Danielewicz as Elisabeth.
Language: Portuguese. Filmed in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil.

I watched the film in the dark before searching about the production, in order to give an unpretentious analysis: (…) what first touched me was the return to my childhood memories in a multi-faith family(…); it respectfully approached religious themes with sensitivity and openness. I’ve become a fan and will watch her future productions- Rosana Ritta, Journalist/ Executive Editor of Jornal ND
In this piece by director Aline Andrade, superstition and faith orbit the home of the girl Elisabeth (played by talented Zoê França Danielewicz), who lives with her parents in a modest house(…) where she communicates with two entities that are one: Catholic and Umbanda. The short film captivates the viewer (…) in an intriguing script that holds suspense and curiosity. –Marcos Cardoso, Journalist for Jornal ND
“The film portrays the culture of the region and features beautiful performances, transforming a controversial topic into something easy to understand.” Jessie Lodi, Film Columnist for Acontecendo Aqui and Podcaster at CineGirls
The film is very important at the time of religious intolerance in which we live. (…)The cinematic vision in the form of legend and folklore helps to understand the need for dialogue between different forms of faith and that the family is the main instrument of transformation, to break myths and create respect for different rituals. Anselmo Prada, Journalist and Columnist for Portal Making of
The film portrays real life with sensitivity. The religious approach presented expresses what is written in John 14:2, “In my Father’s house there are many mansions…”, since the couple’s daughter revealed clairvoyance by communicating with the spiritual, both the orixás and the saints of the catholic church. I really liked this theme and congratulate the entire team. Deia Sell, Columnist for Portal da Ilha- Florianópolis/SC
“Macumba” is a typically Brazilian piece. It shows the environment of a simple family and their beliefs and fears, where each one seeks solace in the places where they believe. The central message of religious diversity was conveyed with lightness and harmony. Jailson Sá, Chief Editor for Portal Acontecendo Aqui
